Sports for Tuesday, June 17th

 

Soccer: World Cup Group play

USA 2, Ghana 1

-       Clint Dempsey scored in the first minute

-       After Ghana tied it up with less than 10 minutes to go, but 4 minutes later John Brooks sent home a header for the difference

-       Team USA will take on Portugal, Sunday at 4pm

 

-       Striker Jozy Altidore left the game early with a hamstring injury and will be evaluated today

 

Germany 4, Portugal 0

-       The lopsided score in the other group game is good news for the US, as one of the tiebreakers is score differential

 

MLB: Red Sox 1, Twins 0

-       Twins only had 3 hits

-       Kevin Correia gave up one run in 6 innings

-       Twins & Red Sox back in action today, 6:10pm

-       Phil Hughes (7-2) vs. John Lester (7-7) is the pitching match-up

 

-       Jason Kubel was released by the Twins yesterday. He was designated for assignment when the Twins added Kendrys Morales, and then refused assignment to the Minor Leagues.

 

-       Tony Gwynn, 54, passed away yesterday from cancer. The career long Padre was one of baseball's best hitters, finishing with a career .338 batting average, second only to Ted Williams in the modern age and he Gwynn also won 8 batting titles, 2nd most all-time

 

High School Sports: Boys State Championship 2A: Cathedral 5, Fairmont 4

-       Crusaders trailed 4-0 late before their comeback

-       Jeff Fasching was credited with 4 earned runs before the bullpen shut them down

-       The title is Cathedral's (and Head Coach Bob Karn's) 8th State Championship, all since 1977

-       There is a get together Wednesday night in the Cathedral Commons to celebrate Cathedral’s state title. 6:30pm, all are welcome

 

1A Final: New Life Academy of Woodbury 5, New York Mills 4

3A Final: Postponed to today at 4pm because of rain

 

Northwoods League: Blue Anchors 5, Rox 3

-       Rox drop another on the road, but return home tonight against Alexandria, 7:05pm first pitch

-       Tonight is Bark in the Park, first 250 dogs to the game will get a Rox dog dish
