Sports for Monday, June 9th

 

MLB: Astros 14, Twins 5

-       Astros take 2 out of 3 over the weekend

-       Samuel Deduno dropped to 2-4 on the year after giving up 5 ER in 3 IP

-       Twins made a move off the field, signing free agent Kendry Morales for a one year, prorated 14 million dollars contract. Morales hit .277 with 23 HR's last year for Seattle

-       To make room for Morales, they designated Jason Kubel for assignment 

 

-       Twins are on the road North of the border against Toronto, 6:07pm first pitch. Ricky Nolasco (4-5) vs. R.A. Dickey (6-4)

 

MLB Draft Notes: Some local kids were selected in the MLB Draft

-       Former SCSU pitcher Kyle Fischer was taken by the Miami Marlins (30th round)

-       MSU-Mankato (and Sauk Rapids-Rise graduate) Jason Hoppe was taken by the Texas Rangers (27th round)

-       Both players played for the Rox last season

 

-       -Another famous name was drafted over the weekend as the San Diego Padres drafted Johnny Manziel, who has not played baseball since High School

 

NBA: Heat 98, Spurs 96

-       LeBron James had 35 points and 10 rebounds in the win

-       Game 3 of the series is Tuesday in Miami

 

NHL: Stanley Cup Finals, Kings @ Rangers, 7pm

-       Kings lead the series 2-0

-       Rangers have led both games of the finals 2-0, but the Kings have forced OT in both games. The Kings have not led a single second of regulation

 

-       Good news for the Wild, they believe that Josh Harding will be a full go for camp come next season

 

Horse Racing: California Chrome came up short in his bid for the Triple Crown, finishing in a tie for fourth, as Tonalist won the race.

-       The owner for California Chrome made headlines over the weekend, calling the other owners “cowards” for not racing in the other two races of the triple crown

-       The winning jockey for the Belmont Stakes is paid 80k before fees and taxes, afterwards it is 57k

 

College Sports:

-       The Ed O'Bannon lawsuit is in Federal Court today. O'Bannon is leading a group of former players that is suing the NCAA for profiting from college players likeliness. 

 

NFL:

-       It looks as if the Minnesota Vikings have reached a deal to name their new stadium. According to reports, US Bank will pay between 7 and 10 million for 25 years.

-       Former NFL Quarterback, and current ESPN analyst, Mark Brunell's daughter Caitlyn, won Miss Alabama

 

Northwood's League: Rox 10, Blue Anchors 2

-       The St. Cloud Rox continue to stay hot as they won their 4th game in a row

-       SS Chris Paul went 3-4 and is 11-18 during the Rox winning streak

-       Rox are 10-3 on the season

-       Rox @ Alexandria, 6:35pm tonight

 

NASCAR: Dale Earnhart Jr. won at Pocono yesterday, his 2nd win of the season

-       Next week's race is at the Michigan International Speedway

 

MSC:

State Track Championships

-       Boys side: Foley's Tyler Beehler won championships in the 100, 200 and was part of Foley's winning 400 relay team 

-       Girls side: Rocori's Erin Huls took home the state title in the 300 meter hurdles

 

State Baseball Championships

-       Class 2A: St. Cloud Cathedral got the top seed for the 2nd year in a row, they will take on The Blake School, Thursday, 10am at Putz Field in St. Cloud

-       Class 3A: Brainerd is unseeded and will take on top seeded Lakeville North Thursday, 10am at Midway Stadium in St. Paul

 

Tennis:

-       Rafael Nadal topped Novak Djokovic in four sets. Nadal has won 9 out of the last 10 French Opens.
