ST. CLOUD, MN (KNSI) – A pair of Central Lakes Conference high school baseball teams remain alive in the hunt for a state tournament berth and will meet in a semi-final match-up.
The St. Cloud Apollo Eagles won the regular season CLC title and finished as the number eight team in the state. The Rocori Spartans won thirteen games on the season and were ranked in the top twenty at various points in the season. Now the two St. Cloud Area contenders will meet Saturday in the third round of the Section 8-AAA tournament after dispatching their second round opponents on Monday.
Apollo, the #2 seed in the section beat Big Lake 4-3. Meanwhile Rocori, the #3 seed, dispatched Sartell, another Central Lakes foe, 5-2. Both teams received a bye in the first round of the tournament.
The winner of Saturday's 11 a.m. game at the MAC in St. Cloud will be just two wins from a sectional title, while the loser will have to fight back through the loser's bracket. One way or another, the Spartans and Eagles could meet again before the dust settles in Section 8.
Apollo won both of the regular season games shutting out Rocori 1-0 at home and 4-0 in Cold Spring.
Other Central Lakes team saw their season end early in the tournament. Sartell (8-13) scored an upset over higher seeded Monticello (11-9) in their first round matchup prior to their aforementioned loss to Rocori. Sauk Rapids Rice (9-10) also advanced to the second round, beating Moorhead, but lost to top seed Bemidj i(19-1). St. Cloud Tech entered the tournament with just four wins and fell by a single run to Alexandria.
The eventual champion of the section will be decided at the MAC on Tuesday, June 5.
