ST. CLOUD, Minn (SCSU) - The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University men's hockey team rallied with a pair of goals in the third period to earn a 3-3 tie against #9/10 Union College Saturday at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
The Huskies opened the night's offense in the first period with a goal by junior forward Joey Holka at 12:26. This was Holka's first goal of the 2013-14 season and he was assisted on the play by senior forward Nic Dowd and sophomore forward Jimmy Murray. The play capped a stellar first period for the Huskies, which saw them outshoot Union 14-7.
In the second period, Union turned the tide by outshooting the Huskies 13-7 and by also posting three unanswered goals. The Dutchmen lit the lamp for the first time on the night at 6:06 of the second period with a power play goal by Daniel Ciampini. He was assisted on the play by Shayne Gostisbeh and Mike Vecchione.
Union gained a 2-1 lead at 9:03 of the second period with an even-strength goal by Daniel Carr. Jeff Taylor and Matt Wilkins had assists on the play for the Dutchmen. To end the second period scoring, Eli Lichenwald scored at 10:07 of the second an assist from Carr.
In the third period, the tide rolled back to the Huskies side as they outshot Union by a 13-4 tally in the final period. SCSU also rallied to gain the tie with a pair of unanswered goals in the third period.
The first marker was charted on the power play by Joey Benik at 3:32 of the third. Jonny Brodzinski and Kalle Kossila provided assists on the goal, which was Benik's fifth of the season and 12th as a Husky.
In the closing minute of play with the Huskies on the power play, Brodzinski ignited the Brooks Center with the game-tying goal at 19:40 of the third. SCSU had the extra-attacker on the ice and an empty net when Brodzinski converted to make it 3-3. Benik and Dowd each chalked up assists on the play for the Huskies. This was Brodzinski's eight goal of the season and his 30 career goal in two seasons at SCSU. Brodzinski now leads the team this year with 16 points (8g/8a). Benik ended the day with one goal and one assist and now has 12 points (5g/7a) in 2013-14.
Dowd finished his night with two assists, which pushes his season totals to six assists and 15 points in 2013-14. He also moves with four points of the 100-point club with his work tonight against Union. In 133 games at SCSU, Dowd now has 39 goals, 57 assists and 96 points.
The OT session was a scoreless draw between the two squads as the Huskies posted four shots and Union had two in the extra session. In the shootout, which did not count for any points since this was a non-conference game, Union prevailed by a 2-1 margin. Ciampini and Carr made goals for the Dutchmen in the shootout, while SCSU's only shootout goal was posted by Brodzinski.
On the night, SCSU outshot the Dutchmen 38-26. On the power play, SCSU was 2-of-5 and Union was 1-of-2. Ryan Faragher made 23 saves in the game and moved his season record to 10-2-2, while Colin Stevens had 35 saves for Union.
