(KNSI) – Minnesota’s Republican Congressional delegation has said they will not vote in favor of impeaching President Donald Trump.
Sixth District Representative Tom Emmer issued a statement condemning the violence at the U.S. Capitol in Washington last week but accused Democrats of further dividing the country by moving to impeach the president.
Newly minted Seventh District Representative Michelle Fischbach also says she opposes the impeachment.
Minnesota’s other two Republican representatives, Jim Hagedorn in the First District covering southern Minnesota, and Pete Stauber in the Eighth District covering a sliver of the northern Twin Cities, the iron range, and up to the Canadian border, also oppose the impeachment.
The state’s four Democratic representatives and both Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith are in favor of it. Representative Ilhan Omar, who has long been in the president’s crosshairs, said after the siege on the Capitol Wednesday was one of the first to call for Trump’s impeachment and announced on Twitter drawing up articles that day. The articles accuse Trump of inciting an insurrection following the deadly clash at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th as Congress worked to certify the electoral votes from the 2020 presidential election.
The House is taking up the debate Wednesday morning before voting on impeachment. The measure is expected to pass the House, with roughly two dozen Republicans saying they will support it. It then moves on to the Republican-controlled Senate. Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is said to be pleased by the move but wants to see the article before it’s debated.
Presidential powers would then be handed over to Vice President Mike Pence until Inauguration Day, January 20th.
