Tigers' Perfect Season Comes To An End

ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI)- The Hibbing Blue Jackets defeated the St. Cloud Tech Tigers in Class 3A State Tournament Quarterfinals on Thursday afternoon.
After a scoreless 1st inning, Riley Versich hit an RBI single off of Tech starting pitcher Trevor Koenig to give the Blue Jackets a 1-0 advantage. Hibbing added another run in the 2nd on starting pitcher Travis Carruth's RBI single.
The Tigers struck back in the top of the 2nd inning. Nick Schmitt and Max Unze drove in runs off of Blue Jackets starter Travis Carruth to tie the game at 2.
The Blue Jackets continued to get after Koenig in the 3rd inning. The big hit came off the bat of Andrew Mickelson who's 2 RBI double gave Hibbing a 4-2 lead. The Blue Jackets added another run to extend their lead to 5-2.
The Tigers scored a run in the 4th inning when Austin Nikolas scored on Nick Schmitt's RBI double.
The Blue Jackets started to pull away in the 5th inning. Will Durie and Dylan Mattson drove in runs for Hibbing and the Blue Jackets took a 7-3 lead.
The Tigers scored a run in the 5th inning but left the bases loaded. The Blue Jackets added two insurance runs in the top of the 7th and came away with a 9-4 victory
Blue Jacket starter Travis Carruth pitched 4 innings giving up 3 runs and had an RBI in the 2nd inning. For his efforts he was named the All Star Trophy and Awards Player of the Game.
With the win, the Blue Jackets move onto to the State Tournament Semifinals where they will take on the winner of the Alexandria v St. Thomas Academy game.
The loss was the Tigers first of the season. They will play in the consolation bracket on Friday at Northwestern University.
