(KNSI) - While everyone was attempting to brave the cold weather this past Saturday, the Sartell Sabre Gymnastics Team continued to heat up as their season closes in on their final few weeks.
Placing second at the True Team State Meet is just one more accomplishment amidst the great season the Sabres are having.
The host team, Detroit Lakes, ended up winning the event with a score of 188.4, despite suffering a tragedy to their team and community earlier in the week.
Sartell posted an impressive score of 182 to continue their quest for a MN State Championship.
Willmar, Monticello and Watertown-Mayer/Mound Westonka rounded out the top five in the highly competitive, invite-only field of the top ten teams in the state at Class A.
The Sabres are currently ranked 2nd in the state in Class A according to the Minnesota Girls Gymnastics Coaches Association.
Although the team has been consistently scoring among the top-three in the state, coach Tyler LaBonne feels they have yet to see their best.
"I don't think we've put together a full meet yet this year. We've had strange things happen but my message to the girls every time is 'go out and do your normal', because our normal is fantastic."
Just a few weeks remain in the grueling gymnastics season that has fielded the Sabres with some injuries to two of their top three contributors from last season.
That type of loss for most of the season would cripple most teams but Sartell has seen 17 girls contribute to their varsity scores throughout the year.
One of Sartell's injured contributors was Emma Schwartz (running in top picture below) that is now making her way back after elbow surgery this past summer.
Schwartz was one of two gymnasts for Sartell that competed in all four events in Detroit Lakes along with senior, Abby Weber.
According to coach LaBonne, "[Emma] put together a very solid meet."
Weber continued her quest to become a MN State Champion by recording a 9.8 on vault and setting a new event record for vault for Sartell. (Picture below is her reacting to her score)
The Sartell Gymnastics Team will host Alexandria January 31st at 6:00 p.m.; Conference Championships will be held at Sauk Rapids High School February 9th at 9:00 a.m.
