(KNSI) - The Tech Tigers have a new head football coach.
The St. Cloud school district says assistant coach Jon Benson is taking over the head coaching duties.
Benson has been the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach for the Tigers since 2013.
He has six years of head coaching experience at Apollo High School.
Benson has a Master’s degree in education from College of St. Scholastica and a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Southwest Minnesota State University.
Benson will meet with the players and coaches to start planning for the 2018-19 season as early as this week.
"We know he is going to continue to take the program in the direction we expect it to go," said Athletic Director David Langerud, who recently came over to Tech from Apollo.
"He's a high quality, character guy that understands the importance of hard work, discipline, grit and respect for the game. He will be an excellent role model for our students, staff and community.”
Benson replaces Gregg Martig, who left Tech High School to take a teaching and assistant football coach position with Pequot Lakes.
Last season, the Tigers, with players like Brevyn Spann-Ford and James Kaczor, posted an 8-3 record and made it to the playoffs, losing an exciting game to Elk River in the snow 14-13.
