(KNSI) – When teams face-off against each other for the third time in just over three weeks, nobody knows how it’ll unfold.

However, after being down 1-0 to Sartell for the first three innings, Apollo broke things open with a three-run fourth.

With one out in the fourth inning, Sam Holthaus lined a triple off Sartell pitcher Jake Schelonka; John Huebsch followed with an RBI double to knot the score at one.

Derek Stanoch kept the scoring going with a base hit and trusty Tanner Roob then scored on a passed-ball to give the Eagles the 3-1 lead heading to top of the fourth.

Apollo head coach Adam Savolainen was impressed with the way his players approached facing a tough arm like Schelonka.

“Our guys did a really good job at not swinging at pitchers pitches, especially in certain counts.”

The Eagles then added five more runs in the fifth inning to really put the pressure on the Sabres.

With the offense finding its rhythm midway through the game, Savolainen then looked to starting pitcher Reece Johnson who tossed seven one-run innings to get the win.

Savolainen added that Johnson’s effort today was a key for moving forward in the Section 5AAA Tournament.

“[Reece] did just a fantastic job. He hadn’t started a playoff game for us yet this season; by him pitching today, it sets us up to be able to come back with one of the guys that started a different game.”

Johnson struck-out eight batter, walked five and gave up three hits in his seven innings of work.

Apollo tacked-on another run in the sixth inning en route to a 9-1 victory, their second win against the Sabres this season.

Stanoch and Sam Luepke ended with 2 RBI apiece for Apollo; Holthaus and John Huebsch added one RBI each.

Sartell ends the season with a record of 11 wins and 11 losses (2-2 in postseason); Apollo now gets set to face Rocori at 4:00 pm Tuesday, June 4th at St. John’s University.
