(KNSI) - Becoming a great high school athlete takes consistency and the willingness to work hard in every aspect of the sport one is participating in.
The above statement may ring truest when talking about competing in high school golf.
Anyone that has tried to become great at golf knows exactly how demanding the sport can be.
However, once-in-a-while, a young athlete breaks through and shows everyone something special.
That is exactly the case when talking about St. Cloud Cathedral Sophomore, Taylor Mathiasen.
Mathiasen shot a 99 to take third-overall in their first meet and followed that up with a 48 in nine holes to help her team win the conference meet at Milaca, May 3rd.
Even with the lack of a regular spring, Mathiasen has shown head coach, Angela Heisner, what type of golfer she may become.
“I expect great things from her these next three years.”
If it takes hard work to become great at golf, Heisner may be correct with her expectations of Mathiasen.
Coach Heisner went on to state, “She is one of the hardest working players I’ve coached. When we were stuck inside, I was having two practices and she was coming to both.”
Like many of the athletes from Cathedral, Mathiasen also plays three sports.
In the fall, Mathiasen plays volleyball; in the winter, she plays Hockey, talk about being busy.
Coach Heisner did not seem concerned about Mathiasen being able to remain disciplined through a tough spring.
“[Taylor] is really focused this year, she asks for help and really wants to get better.”
Cathedral hopes Mathiasen continues shooting low scores as they play pre-sections at Blackberry Ridge in Sartell, Monday, May 7th.
Congratulations, Taylor and good luck to you and Cathedral golf in the future!
