(KNSI) - Even though the high school softball season seemingly just started, the area schools are already in the second round of sectional playoffs.
Disregarding potential mental road-blocks of the long winter-like spring, Gabby Heying of St. Cloud Cathedral is having a season to remember at the dish and in the field.
Although her entire season has been great, Heying started off at a particularly torrid pace in her first seven games.
After seven games, the junior first-baseman tallied 14 hits in 23 at-bats for a .609 average.
The three-sport-athlete also tallied 14 RBI in the first seven games after crushing three doubles and a home-run.
In a spring in which most athletes would start with a shaky glove, Heying had 47 putouts, two assists and only one error.
On Monday, May 21st, Heying went 3 for 4 with 3 RBI in a 15-3 routing of Foley in the first game of section play.
Heying’s play had one Cathedral assistant coach applauding her efforts.
“[Gabby’s] just a very consistent athlete; she doesn’t get frazzled and just gets the job done every time on offense and defense.”
Along with softball, Heying plays basketball in the winter and was an All-Conference volleyball player this past fall.
Even while playing three sports, Heying is a straight-A-student and head coach Mark Chamernick attests to her behavior off-the-field.
“[Gabby] has great character and a strong work ethic."
Due to players like Heying and their efforts, the Cathedral Softball Team has a record of 11-4 and is primed to contest for a section 6AA title.
Heying and Cathedral take on highly-touted Pierz at Waite Park Plaza Field, tonight, May 24th at 5:00 pm.
Congratulations Gabby and good luck to you in your many future endeavors!
