(KNSI) - Members of any type of hockey team will all say the same thing; good goaltending makes things much easier.

Sometimes, the ability to score can mask poor goaltending but the St. Cloud Area Icebreakers haven’t had to mask the way their goalie has played the last few games.

Ashlea Arvidson has been playing absolutely lights-out in net and KNSI was witness to it firsthand December 13th at Alexandria.

The Cardinals peppered Arvidson with 35 shots and she did not allow a goal until her team was up 3-0, midway through the third period.

The number of shots Arvidson faced only tells half the story.

Alexandria’s shots were extraordinary all night; testing the Cathedral Junior with five breakaways and crisp passing to no avail.

Until facing Arvidson, the Cardinals were ranked 10th by MN Girls’ Hockey Hub.

Earlier last week, the Icebreakers defeated Northern Lakes 6-0 with Arvidson stopping all 22 shots.

Arvidson and the Icebreakers have now won four of their last five games with their goaltender stopping 57 of the last 58 shots she has faced.

Factoring in that Arvidson tore an ACL in 2016 and 2017, this has been an amazing stretch of redemption, both on and off the ice.

After the season ends, Arvidson will be going to Tanzania to help build a church with other classmates.

Away from the ice, the junior also carries a 3.97 GPA and has been an Honor Student since 7th grade.

Arvidson also plays varsity soccer and bass in the varsity orchestra at Cathedral.

The Icebreakers (4-6) now take on crosstown rival, the Sauk Rapids-Rice/ Sartell Storm’n Sabres (5-5-1) Tuesday, December 18th at 7:00 p.m. on the KNSI Sports Network.

Congratulations, Ashlea and good luck to you and the Icebreakers the rest of the season!
