(KNSI) - The St. Cloud Apollo Track and Field Team is competing at the Section 8AA Meet in Fergus Falls the next couple days and one of the reasons many expect them to perform well is because of this week's winner.
If Logan Lommel has a performance at sections like he did last week at the Central Lakes Conference Meet, the senior and the Apollo Track and Field Team should be pleased.
Lommel finished first in the 1600 and the 800 and took third in the 4x400-relay; his performances assisted his team in earning second-place at the Central Lakes Conference Meet.
Finishing second last week with 114 points gave the Eagles their best finish since the 1992-1993 season.
Along with finishing the season strong, Lommel currently sits third in Apollo history in the 400-meter-dash with a time of 50.067 that he accomplished at the Hamline Elite Meet earlier this season.
Lommel's time of 1:58.27 in the 800-meter-dash is best in the section and 20th in the entire state of Minnesota.
Combining with Hamze Hussein, Liban Mohammed and Joel Knopp in the 4x800 relay has also earned Lommel the best time in the section and their time of 8:14.93 is 17th best in the state.
Obviously, first year head coach Justin Darrow has to be pleased with Lommel's performances on the track but he is equally impressed with the way the star conducts himself away from the sport.
"I have been fortunate to coach Logan for the last three years and he continually amazes me on and off the track. Each year he has matured a little more and has become quite the student-athlete."
Although Lommel's season and high school career continues for a few more weeks, Darrow knows the star will will do whatever it takes to compete at a high level.
"[Logan] is not only one of the most competitive athletes to step out on the track but one of the track athletes with the highest race IQ's that I have had the pleasure to coach."
Lommel and the Apollo Eagles Track and Field Team will continue to compete at the Section 8AA Championships the next two days in Fergus Falls.
Congratulations, Logan and good luck to you and the St. Cloud Apollo Eagles Track and Field Team the rest of this season and beyond!
