ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Big players make big plays in big games. Sauk Rapids Rice/Sartell Storm'N Sabres goalkeeper Clare Minnerath fit that bill last week, and for her efforts she is this week's All-Star Trophy and Awards Player of the Week.
In a tie game last Friday night, the sophomore net-minder stopped a breakaway shot attempt from the cross-town rival St. Cloud Icebreakers with just 4:15 left to play. Less than two minutes later, her squad scored the tie-breaking goal in an eventual 2-1 win.
On the night, despite the St. Cloud getting the edge in scoring chances over Sauk Rapids Rice/Sartell, Minnerath turned away 32 of 33 shots to keep her team with a chance to win. The victory, key for the Storm N' Sabres who sit third behind section leading St. Cloud, was a revenge win after they fell to the Icebreakers earlier this season.
The big game in net is nothing new for Minnerath this year. Including last week's action she complied a save percentage just shy of 96% and good enough for the second best mark in the state. Her goals against average on the season, just over one goal per game, is good for fifth in all of Minnesota Girls Hockey.
Minnerath, in her first season in net, has helped the Storm N' Sabres compile a 13-2-2 record, picking up the decision in all 17 of those games. She may be hitting her stride in the stretch run of the season with just 7 goals allowed over the last 8 games for Sauk Rapids-Rice/Sartell.
