High school football, more so than any level, affords players the chance to get on the field on both offense and defense. This week's MSC Player of the Week took full advantage of that opportunity.
St. Cloud Apollo quarterback and safety Ben Alvord put together quite a stat-line in the Eagles momentous 26-20 victory over rival St. Cloud Tech. As the signal-caller Alvord completed 14 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Alvord's second TD toss came from 77 yards out and tied the game in the 4th quarter. Alvord also rushed for a one yard score, accounting in all for three touchdowns on the night.
On defense the sophomore had just as big an impact from his strong safety spot. Early in the game Alvord intercepted a Tiger pass to stall a potential scoring drive. Then, with his team trailing by a single score, Alvord recovered a fumble that set up the game-tying touchdown.
Thanks in part to Alvord's player of the week caliber game, the Eagles snapped a nine game losing streak to their cross-town rivals and won their second straight conference match-up.
