Winning is a Habit

Forgive me Viking fans, but Vince Lombardi may have said it best "Winning is a habit. Unfortunately, so is losing". For Apollo, losing as been their habit for quite sometime, but Head Coach Justin Skaalerud just may be changing that habit.

Coach Skaalerud joined Notch and me at The Blue Line in Sartell on Saturday for something he would like to do a lot more of: talking about his team's win streak. After losing twenty-two straight games, the Apollo Eagles have now won two games in a row. A week after topping the Sauk Rapids-Rice Storm 9-6, the Eagles had the biggest win of their season, a 26-20 win over rival St. Cloud Tech. The win over Tech was Apollo's first win over the Tigers since 2003.

The thing of it is, if you have been paying attention, the Eagles were playing good football this season. They opened the season against Sartell, and they held the Sabres to a season-low 6 points in a tough battle. Every week since then they have been in every game fighting to the final whistle. Two weeks ago, they were 0-5 and very easily could have folded up the tents and packed up for the rest of the season. Instead, Skaalerud and company has kept working and has become one of the more exciting teams to watch.

Some other teams in the area are ground and pound; they run you over with a ground game that can't be stopped. On the flip side, Apollo is taking to the air. Sophomore Quarterback Ben Alvord threw for over 200 yards in the upset win over Tech. Junior Wide Receiver Noel Teigen leads a talented group of wideouts that is opening up the passing game for the Eagles.

Sophomore Quarterback, Junior Wideout and a young head coach with big aspirations? Looks like the Apollo fans better start getting used to winning.
