SCSU HUSKY BASEBALL WRAP-UP
With each report I will plan to include a game summary on the Huskies and also their Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference rivals. I will also plan to include any updated National and Regional ratings. The NSIC Standings with each wrap-up and a conference scoreboard. In the game summaries I will attempt to highlight any local players from their conference rival teams too. For more on Husky Baseball see the school's website.
NORTHERN SUN INTERCOLLEGIATE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
SCSU HUSKIES 9 UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH BULLDOGS 7 (5/10 @ Putz)
The Huskies defeated UMD Bulldogs in a slugfest in the first round of the conference tournament. The Huskies collected 13 hits and they committed just one error to advance to play Augustana in the semifinals. Dominic Austing started on the mound, he threw 4 2/3 innings, he gave up 8 hits, 5 runs and he recorded 7 strikeouts. Kevin Bolder a junior from Tomahawk High School of Wisconsin, retired two batters, he gave up 2 hits, 1 run. David Kroger threw 2 2/3 innings in relief, his great performance earned him the win. He gave up one hit and he recorded two strikeouts, as he faced eight batters. Miles Nablo a senior from Eden Prairie High School closed the door, he threw the final inning, the right hander earned his fifth save of the season.
The Huskies offense collected ten hits off the Bulldog starting pitcher, there were five Huskies with multi hit games. Bo Schmitz a junior transfer from Bemidji went 2-4 with a 2 doubles for 3 big RBI's and he scored a pair of runs. The Huskies first baseman, Mathew Meyer got a couple of huge base hits, he went 2-3 for two big RBI's. Jackson Goplen the Huskies left fielder went 1-3 with a double and a sacrifice fly for two big RBI's and he scored one run. The Huskies center fielder, Cooper Maas, continues to roam the outfield, he went 2-4 with a big late inning triple for a RBI and he scored a run. Mitch Mallek a sophomore from Stevens Point Area High School of Wisconsin went 2-4 with a double and he scored a pair of runs. Judd Davis the Husky second baseman went 2-5 and he scored a run and Jordan Joseph the Husky shortstop went 1-4 with a sacrifice bunt, one stolen base and he scored two runs. Ethan Ibarra the Husky third baseman, went 1-3 with a beautiful squeeze bunt for a RBI in the 8th inning.
Marcus Frederickson was the Bulldogs starting pitcher and the pitcher of record. Ben Danielson went 2-3 with a 3 run home run, 4 RBI's, was hit by a pitch. Matt Vogt went 2-4 with a home run, Grant Farley went 2-5 with a home run and Brett Milazzo went 3-4 with a sacrifice fly and he scored a pair of runs.
SCSU HUSKIES 3 AUGUSTANA VIKINGS 2 (5/11/17 @ Putz)
The Huskies was the visiting team at home, as the Vikings were the No. 2 seed. They put up 2 runs in the top of the 3rd and the Vikings answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the 4th inning. The score remained tied till the top of the 8th inning, when they loaded the bases and a run was forced in, when Ethan Ibarra was hit by a pitch. Both the Huskies and the Vikings left 11 runners stranded on the bases. The Huskies starting pitcher, lefty Cal Giese threw 6 innings, he scattered 6 hits, surrendered 2 runs, 2 walks and he recorded 8 strikeouts. Kyle Boser threw 1 1/3 innings of relief, to earn the win, he did give a walk. Miles Miles Nablo threw the final 1 2/3 innings to earn his sixth save of the season. Miles gave up 1 hit, 1 walk and he recorded a pair of strikeouts. The Huskies middle infielders Jordan Joseph and Judd Davis played great defense, Judd went 1-4 with a sacrifice bunt and Jordan went 1-4 and he was hit by a pitch. Mitch Mallek the Huskies catcher went 1-5 with two big RBI's. He drove in the runs early in the top of the 3rd inning. Mathew Meyer the human vacuum at first base, went 1-4 with a walk and he scored a run. Mathew stung the ball the whole game as did some of the Huskies, but right at a Viking. Jackson Goplen went 2-4, as he covered a lot of ground in left field along with both Logan Swann and Cooper Maas, both played great defense. Logan went 1-3 and was hit by a pitch and Cooper scored a run. Ethan Ibarra the Huskies third baseman, walked twice, scored a run, took one for the team in the bottom of the 8th inning to force a run in.
Dalton Allen was the pitcher of record for the Vikings, Patrick O'Donnell went 3-3 with a pair of walks, 1 stolen base and he scored a run. Ryan Menssen went 1-4 with 2 RBI's and Jacob James went 2-4 with a stolen base.
MINNESOTA STATE MANKATO MAVERICKS 6 SCSU HUSKIES 3 (5/12/17 @ Faber)
The Mavericks put up their runs in the middle innings and the Huskies could not answer as they were defeated 6-3. Mitchell Bauer was the starter on the mound for the Mavericks, he threw 7 innings to earn the win. Ricky Digrugillers closed the door with 2 innings of relief. Lefty Zach Siggelkow a sophomore from St. Anthony Village High School started on the mound for the Huskies. He threw 4 2/3 innings, he was the pitcher of record, he gave up 6 hits, 3 runs, one walk and he recorded five strikeouts. David Kroger threw 2/3 of an inning, he gave up 3 hits, 3 runs, 1 walk and he recorded one strikeout. Kevin Bolder thew 1/3 of a inning in relief, he gave up a hit and he recorded a strikeout. Kyle Boser threw 2 1/3 innings of relief, he issued a walk and he recorded three strikeouts.
The Huskies did put up 2 runs on the board, with a two run home run by Logan Swann. Logan is a senior from Redwood Valley High School, he went 1-4 with his 2 big RBI's. Judd Davis went 2-4 and he scored a run. Mitch Mallek went 1-3 with a double and he earned a walk. Bo Schmitz went 1-4 with a RBI and Mathew Meyer went 1-4. Jackson Goplen went 1-4 and he scored a run and Jordan Joseph had a sacrifice fly.
The Mavericks were led by Josh Wenzel a Little Falls High School graduate, he went 2-5 with a double for a RBI. Eric Peterson went 1-4 with a double and a sacrifice fly for 2 RBI's and he scored a run. Tyler Berg went 3-3 with a sacrifice fly and he scored a run.
SCSU HUSKIES 5 UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH BULLDOGS 2 (5/12/17 @ Faber)
The Huskies earned another shot at the Mavericks by defeating the Bulldogs for the 2nd time in the tournament in a three hour game. The Huskies played errorless baseball and they had a couple of big home runs to give their pitchers all the support they needed. Austin Caspersen a senior from Centura High School in Nebraska battled the Bulldogs for 6 1/3 innings to earn the win. He gave up 7 hits, 2 runs, issued one walk and he recorded 2 big strikeouts. Aaron Hammann a freshman from Chaparral High School of Colorado closed the door with 2 2/3 innings of relief, to earn the save. He gave up 2 hits, 1 walk and he recorded 2 strikeouts.
A pair of juniors were the big offensive leaders for the Huskies, Bo Schmitz had a big game from his designated hitter spot. Bo went 2-4 with a big 2 run home run and a single for 3 big RBI's and he had a pair of stolen bases. Jackson Goplen had a 400' plus to straight away center field for a big RBI and he had a pair of stolen bases. Judd Davis had a very good game from his 2nd base position, as he was flying all over the field. He went 1-4 at the dish, he was hit by a pitch and he scored a run. Mitch Mallek had a good game, he went 2-3 with a sacrifice bunt and he scored a pair of runs. Logan Swann made a couple of great plays in left field and he went 1-3 at the dish and he earned a walk. The Husky infielders continue to make great plays Jordan Joseph a freshman really flashed some leather with several good plays at shortstop and he earned a walk at the dish. Ethan Ibarra a sophomore again made several very nice plays at third base. Mathew Meyer a sophomore, in his first catching appearance of this season, called a great game from behind the dish as he took charge of the Husky defense, he earned a pair of walks. Isaac Matchinsky a sophomore got his first start a first base, where he made several good plays. The Huskies have now built their record to 39-15 on the season, very impressive for a very young team.
The Bulldogs Colin Baumgard was the pitcher of record in his relief effort. Ben Danielson went 3-4 with a pair of doubles for 2 RBI's and Dominic Defoe went 1-2 with a double, he was hit by a pitch and he scored a run. Tyler Midas a Junior and a Foley High School graduate went 1-5.
MINNESOTA STATE MANKATO MAVERICKS 4 SCSU HUSKIES 2 (5/13/17 @ Faber)
The Huskies were defeated by their NSIC rival the Mavericks in a tight game for the conference championship. Shannon Ahern started on the mound for the Huskies, a freshman from Academy of the Holy Angels. He battled the Mavericks for 6 1/3 innings, he gave up 10 hits, 4 runs, walked one and he recorded 5 strikeouts. Miles Nablo threw the final 1 2/3 innings in relief, he recorded one strikeout. Just 4 hits for the Huskies on the day, a day where they had a number of hard hit balls that were right at people. Bo Schmitz went 1-4 with a RBI and Ethan Ibarra went 1-3 with a double for a RBI. Judd Davis went 1-4 and he scored a run and Jackson Goplen went 1-3 and he scored a run. Jordan Joseph had a sacrifice fly and Mathew Meyer earned a walk. The Huskies will now advance to regional play next week at a site to be announced. There is a very good chance that they will see the Mavericks in region play.
Nick Belzer was the starting pitcher for the Mavericks, he earned the win with 6 innings of work. Dylan Dresel went 1-2 with a double for 2 RBI's and he scored a run and Jordan Hart went 1-3 with a double for a RBI and he earned a walk. Eric Peterson went 3-4 and he scored a run and Luke Walden went 1-4 with a RBI.
The Huskies will travel to Emporia, Kansas for the 2017 NCAA Division II Central Region tournament, which will be held on May 18-22. Emporia State No. 1 Seed, Minnesota State Mankato No. 2 Seed and SCSU No. 3 Seed.
