(KNSI) – The St. Cloud State University Baseball Team was eliminated Saturday from the NCAA Tournament, losing its second game in two days to the University of Central Missouri.

The Mules were the one seed in the Central Regional, acting as host to four schools, representing the top half of the bracket. The Huskies were the last team in thanks to an automatic qualifying berth from winning the conference tournament the weekend before.

SCSU was defeated by Central Missouri, 7-6, on Friday night to open the double elimination regional. The Huskies bounced back Saturday at noon against Ouachita Bapist University. They squeaked by the Tigers, 5-4, in 13 innings.

It may have taken too much out of the scrappy underdogs as they had to face the Mules again to wrap up a doubleheader after an extended extra innings affair only hours before. The Huskies fell behind 6-0 by the middle innings to the number four team in the country. SCSU tried to rally but fell short, 6-4.

Fellow Northern Sun squads Augustana University and Minnesota State University, Mankato had better luck. Augustana beat Central Missouri twice on the weekend to advance to the Division II Super Regional Round. Minnesota State knocked off the second seeded Missouri Southern in the tiebreaker game, 10-4, to also get to super regionals. They play each other in a best-of-three series next weekend.

Huskies centerfielder John Nett finishes the NCAA season hitting over .400 and he will play again for the Northwoods League’s St. Cloud Rox this summer at Joe Faber Field. Nett scored 78 runs in 2022 for the Rox, which was the most of any player in the college developmental league last year.
