Here's to the Huskies

Most of the time, in order to have a dream season, you usually end up as champion. Although SCSU hockey came up just short on getting a national title, fans will forever remember this past season for years to come. It truly has been a special season filled with milestones, firsts and moments to cherish.

The Huskies accomplished a first when they claimed their first WCHA regular season title and in the final year they were in the league. And it didn't come from an amazing winning streak. It didn't come from a complete domination of the league. It came due to the weekly grinding out of points in every conference series. The Huskies were never swept and never ended up any weekend of WCHA play with less than a split. Their reward is a title and a banner that will proudly hang at the National Hockey and Event Center.

The Huskies were not done there. They left the Final Five disappointed with a semi-final loss to Wisconsin. But found the resolve they had all season and put together a special weekend at the NCAA Midwest Regional in Toledo. Convincing wins over Notre Dame and then Miami propelled St Cloud State into the Frozen Four for the first time in team history. And the emotion and pride shown by Husky fans when the team arrived back in St Cloud is a memory I will always cherish. Special fans for a special team.

And although the Huskies season ended in Pittsburgh in the semi-finals with a loss to Quinnipiac, again they found a way to create another special moment for players and fans alike when Drew LaBlanc became the first Husky to win the coveted Hobey Baker Award. When LaBlanc was announced as the winner, his teammates made their way to the ice and with the togetherness that made this group special, surrounded and enjoyed the moment with Drew.

Add 2 players, (LaBlanc and Nick Jensen) gaining First Team All-America honors. Add Ben Hanowski signing with Calgary and scoring a goal in his first NHL game. Add LaBlanc signing with the Chicago Blackhawks. And in closing, let me add a standing ovation and a heartfelt thank you to this amazing team for a season of amazing accomplishments. Congrats boys....... Here's to the Huskies.
