ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI)- The St. Cloud Cathedral Crusaders advanced to the State Tournament with a 74-67 win over Melrose in the Section 6AA Championship game on Friday night on the KNSI Sports Network
Melrose came out of the gates strong building a 11-3 lead three minutes into the 1st half.
Cathedral mounted a comeback and led 35-31 at half time. Cathedral forward Michael Schaefer had 13 points in the first half.
Cathedral continued to build their lead in the second half and led 52-44 with 9 minutes to go. Melrose chipped away at Cathedral's lead and found themselves down 67-66 with 2 minutes left in the 2nd half.
Cathedral went on a 7-1 run to close out the game and came away with a 74-67 victory.
Catherdral was led by Michael Schaefer who scored 26 points. For his efforts, he was named the All-Star Trophy and Awards Player of the Game. Mitchell Plombon also had 21 points for the Crusaders.
The Dutchmen were led by Dillon Haider who scored 32 points.
This is Cathedral's first State Tournament birth since 2000.
Cathedral will play in the State Tournament quarterfinals on Wednesday. The game will be broadcast live on the KNSI Sports Network.
