ELY, MN (KNSI) – Construction has begun at Lake Vermillion State Park, Minnesota's newest state park near Ely.
The state Department of Natural Resources says Lake Vermillion will be a "next-generation" state park. It will have children's treehouses and an adventure trail with a ropes course. The DNR hopes the park will introduce more young families to the outdoors.
Park Manager Jim Essig says the new park, along with the adjacent Soudan Underground Mine State Park, preserves 10 miles of lake shoreline. He says it has a "Boundary Waters kind of a feel.
Construction on a 70-site campground and day-use area should be wrapped up by about this time next year. The state bought the 3,000-acre property in 2010 for $18 million.
