(KNSI) — The National Weather Service has issued a wind chill warning for dangerously cold wind chills colder than 40 degrees below zero.
The wind chill warning is in effect from midnight to noon on January 1st, 2022.
Forecasters say a surge of arctic air is on the way, and the coldest wind chills will come Friday night through Saturday morning. Air temperatures around central Minnesota will fall between 20 and 25 degrees below zero, with north northwest winds around ten miles an hour.
Friday, light snow will fall from central Minnesota into west central Wisconsin through late afternoon, which could be enough to mess up the roads for those braving the cold to celebrate. Accumulations of 1 to 3” are most likely within a narrow band stretching from Madison and Canby, through St. Cloud, and into northern Wisconsin. Temperatures will fall throughout the day.
Forecasters say to dress in layers, keep a phone charger with you, tell someone where you’re going, when you leave and when you expect to arrive at your destination. Exposed skin can freeze in less than ten minutes.
