ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Federal courts officials in Minnesota say they're worried that automatic spending cuts will jeopardize the smooth running of the justice system.

The cuts are part of what's known as the budget sequester, and they're due to take effect Oct. 1.

Minnesota's federal defender, Katherian Roe, says she will likely have to cut her office's staff from 18 people to 10. The U.S. Attorney's Office, already under a hiring and salary freeze, will also see cuts in personnel and operations although the extent isn't known yet.

The chief federal judge in Minnesota, Michael Davis, says the cuts will severely hamper the administration of justice.
