ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) The Minnesota House is ready to debate the state's first alcohol tax increase since 1987.
The higher booze tax is part of a larger tax package due for a vote Wednesday.
The tax is lodged at the wholesale level so the effect on consumers is hard to pin down. Different types of alcohol will be taxed at varying rates.
Senate Democrats aren't a fan of the alcohol tax and Gov. Mark Dayton is noncommittal.
The House bill is part of the legislative budget balancing task. It would also hike taxes on tobacco, some corporations and certain six-figure and up incomes.
