ST. CLOUD (KNSI) - Following in the footsteps of Benton and dozens of other Minnesota counties, Stearns County has adopted a wheelage tax.
The decision was made unanimously during the board's Tuesday morning meeting, the last possible date for them to approve the tax before the 2014 deadline.
The $10 fee, which will be added onto vehicle registration for 2014, will aid with road and bridge project costs.
The move toward adopting the tax was recommended to the board at their June 25th and July 9th meetings, but Stearns County Public Works Director Jodi Teich says they wanted to review community comments on the issue before giving it the green light.
The wheelage tax was formerly available exclusively to metro-area counties at a rate of $5 per vehicle, but the State Legislature extended the option to all of Minnesota's counties this year, while doubling the amount of the tax to $10.
Benton County approved the move last week.
Teich says the tax will generate an estimated 1.5 million dollars which will go directly to infrastructure projects.
