WAITE PARK, Minn. (KNSI) - Two people were arrested and face felony police evasion and drug possession counts after they refused to stop and led police on a short pursuit through Waite Park and St. Cloud Wednesday, according to Waite Park police officials.
The incident started when a Waite Park officer attempted to pull over a vehicle for a traffic violation near the Crossroads Center shopping mall just after 10:05 p.m. Wednesday. The driver refused, instead leading the officer through mall parking lot before accelerating through a red light at Waite Avenue, a police report stated.
As police pursued, the driver, identified as Kayla Deroiser, 20, of Sauk Rapids, slammed on her brakes twice. During the first stop, the car's passenger-side door opened, but hit a telephone pole and slammed shut. Moments later at 2nd Avenue North and 3rd Street North, the door opened again as passenger Jason Hejhal, 20, of St. Paul jumped out of the vehicle.
Deroiser turned west on to 3rd Street North before finally stopping the vehicle on Rivercrest Drive in St. Cloud. Deroiser was arrested and booked into the Stearns County Jail for felony evading police as well as a misdemeanor count of failing to stop for an accident. In total, the pursuit lasted for 1.7 miles.
Hejhal was found by a Stearns County Sheriff's Department bloodhound and arrested. Officers said they found 12 grams of methamphetamine on Hejhal when he was caught. He was expected to face charges of felony possession of a controlled substance with intent to distribute. Hejhal was also wanted on two outstanding felony warrants.
