ST. CLOUD (KNSI) - John Pederson is officially a candidate for the US House of Representatives.
The sitting senator, representing Minnesota's 14th District, and part owner of St. Cloud company Amcon Block, delivered a campaign speech in front of supporters on Thursday morning.
Pederson says he's spent the last few weeks traveling around the district to get a feel for constituent support. He says it's been positive, and his committment to small business and fiscal conservatism set him apart from his contenders
"I'm not a professional politician," Pederson says. "I'm a true citizen legislator."
Pederson says he's grateful that serving in the MN Legislature is a part time position, so that he's been able to remain immersed in central Minnesota business commumnity.
"My background is very different from the other two candidates in the race," he adds. "John Pederson is a guy who has been going to work in a concrete block plant for 23 years, and he's someone who can take some common sense and research abilities to Washington in fair ways that they can be proud of."
Pederson says he'll be spending the majority of the immediate future visiting delegates, political organizations and businesses around the 6th District.
Pederson is a former St. Cloud city councilmember, now in his second term in the Senate. He is the ranking minority member of the Transportation and Public Safety Committee and also serves on the Capitol Invesment and Finance Committees.
Other Republicans in the race to fill the seat of retiring congresswoman Michele Bachmann are former gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer and Anoka County Board Chairwoman Rhonda Sivarajah.
