BRAINERD, Minn (KNSI) - Authorities have released the name of a man who was killed by officers after he shot and wounded a Crow Wing County sheriff's deputy from a tree stand.

Officers responded to a request for a welfare check at a residence on Sleepy Hollow Road in St. Mathias Township, near Brainerd, yesterday afternoon around 12:45 pm.

When they arrived, they found 50 year-old Donald Johnson in a tree with a gun.

Officials say the officers were able to talk Johnson out of the tree, but he climbed back up and shot a deputy in the arm. Two other officers then shot and killed Johnson.

The deputy was treated at a hospital. His name has not been released.

Sheriff Todd Dahl says deputies have had contact with Johnson in the past.
