ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) Police say 26 people were arrested as hundreds of low-wage workers marched along University Avenue in St. Paul to demand higher pay.

The Friday march stretched for blocks down University Avenue - on a day when many people are concentrating on their holiday spending spree.

Police spokesman Howie Padilla says about 400 people participated in the march, organizers placed the number at nearly 1,000.

The arrests happened after a group linked arms and blocked the intersection of University and Snelling Avenues. Protesters included Service Employees International Union Local 26, TakeAction Minnesota, Minnesotans for a Fair Economy and other labor groups. They say workers deserve higher wages.

The march coincided with other demonstrations, including one at a Brooklyn Center Walmart. Maintenance workers also protested outside the downtown Minneapolis Target.
