ST. PAUL, Minn. (KNSI) The Minnesota Department of Public Safety says the 2012 traffic death toll in the state wnet up for the first time since 2007.
Three-hundred-ninty-five traffic deaths were reported in the state last year. That's a seven-percent increase from the 368 deaths that were recorded in 2011. Drunken drivers were responsible for 104 of those deaths.
Locally, seven traffic deaths were reported in Stearns County, eight in Sherburne County and eight in Benton County.
So far this year, there have been 134 traffic deaths in Minnesota., comapred with 125 at this time in 2012.
The department says the most common causes for crashes are distracted driving, failing to yield the right of way and illegal or unsafe speeds.
