ELK RIVER, Minn. (KNSI) Thin ice continues to be an issue on area lakes.

The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office says two recreational vehicles broke through the ice on Big Elk Lake in the past nine days.

Sheriff Joel Brott says a snowmobile went through the ice and sank in shallow water on the north end of the lake on December 7th. The operator stood on the seat of the sled until help arrived.

On December 16th, an ATV broke through the ice and sank in eight feet of water.

The area where the vehicles went through is near the channel between Briggs Lake and Big Elk Lake.

In both cases, the operators were not wearing life jackets.
