ST. CLOUD, MN (KNSI) - The State Patrol is working with St. Cloud Police, trying to determine what led to a crash that left a Clear Lake teen dead.
The crash happened Monday afternoon along 3rd Street North just before 6 p.m. Investigators say the driver of a pick-up, 17-year-old Joseph Koontz, slammed head-on into an oncoming vehicle as he headed eastbound. Shaun Westrup of St. Cloud says he was in that westbound lane when he saw the teen's truck barreling toward him.
"I just looked up and it was flying right at me. I didn't have enough time to react I just jerked the wheel to the right...jumped the curb and ended up in someone's lawn," Westrup said. "It was less than a second after I jumped the curb; it was almost immediate that he creamed that van right behind me."
Koontz was thrown from the truck and was found pinned underneath the vehicle. He was taken to St. Cloud Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Paramedics treated the driver of the other car, 26-year-old Amanda Binkley of Royalton, at the scene for minor injuries.
