Apple Valley, Minn (KNSI) - Authorities say an Apple Valley man who was killed by a police officer had been shot multiple times.

The Rasmey County Medical Examiner says the man, identified Monday as 48-year-old Carl Anthony Tatum, died of blood loss from multiple gunshot wounds.

According to authorities, a woman called Apple Valley police Sunday evening to report that her live-in boyfriend assaulted and choked her. Officers Tommie Booth and Tara Becker responded. They coaxed Tatum outside, but then he ran back inside the house. Authorities say Booth followed and saw that Tatum had armed himself with a handgun.  Police say Tatum shot at Booth who then returned fire. Tatum was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The two officers are on routine administrative leave while the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigates.
