STILLWATER, Minn. (AP) - A Stillwater man accused of breaking into his ex-girlfriend's apartment and killing her pet snake has been sentenced on one count of burglary.
Twenty-two-year-old Jonathan Utecht was charged in July with felony counts of burglary, terroristic threats and animal torture. In October he pleaded guilty to burglary, and the other charges were dismissed at last week's sentencing.
The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports Utecht was sentenced to 120 days in jail, with credit for 80 days served, plus five years probation.
According to the complaint, Utecht's ex-girlfriend told police she believed her ex-boyfriend had broken into her Stillwater apartment.
Police found the woman's snake on the kitchen floor, with a knife sticking in it and the words "I loved you'' on the floor, apparently written in the snake's blood.
