ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - The man who tried to evade St. Cloud police by speeding into oncoming traffic, killing another driver and an unborn baby in the April 2011 crash pleaded guilty Thursday.
Ricky Gilles, 23, entered a guilty plea to two counts of fleeing an officer resulting in death and a third count of fleeing officers resulting in bodily harm.
Back on April 15, 2011, Gilles was wanted on several felony warrants when officers tried to stop his Jeep on Highway 15 and 2nd Street South in St. Cloud.
Gilles tried to run, but he turned westbound into the eastbound lanes on 2nd Street. He then slammed into a van at 2nd and Waite Avenue at 70 miles an hour.
The crash killed the driver of the van, 30 year-old Tim Casanova, of Starbuck. His passenger, 22-year-old Megan Thomsen, suffered major injuries in the crash, and her unborn child was born by emergency C-section the next day at St. Cloud Hospital.
The baby died two days later. As part of his plea, Gilles won't be sentenced to more than 36 years in jail. He's set to be sentenced next month.
