ST. CLOUD, Minn (KNSI) Mayor Dave Kleis could announce his choice for St. Cloud police chief by the end of next week.

The mayor says background checks are being done on the three finalists this week. Next week, the mayor will interview each of them, and then make the hire.

The finalists are interim St. Cloud Police Chief Richard Wilson, Moorhead Police Chief David Ebinger, and Carver County Chief Deputy Sheriff William Blair Anderson. Wilson has been serving as interim chief since late January, following the retirement of Dennis Ballantine.

Kleis says he's looking for a chief who will make a long-term commitment to the city, and not use the job as a "stepping stone" for further career development.
