LITTLE FALLS, Minn. (KNSI) Byron Smith made a brief court appearance in Morrison County on Monday.

Smith is charged with two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of Haile Kifer and Nicholas Brady at his home last Thanksgiving Day.

Monday's hearing was one in which Smith could have challenged any evidence that investigators have collected against him. But his attorney asked for more time to prepare, and a judge reset the hearing for August 30th.

Smith is free after posting $50,000 bail. He's accused of shooting Kifer and Brady after they broke into his home.

Smith claims he was acting in self-defense.
