ZIMMERMAN, MN (KNSI) - A bear attacked and killed a small dog in the backyard of a central Minnesota home shortly after sunrise Monday.
The Sherburne County sheriff's office says the bear, accompanied by three cubs, was eating out of a bird feeder when the attack happened. DNR assistant wildlife manager Nick Snavely says the dog, Pomeranian, decided at some point to confront the bear and paid the price. Local law enforcement and a conservation officer are tracking the bear. Snavely says if residents spot the bear, they should take their children and pets indoors.
Sheriff Joel Brott says it's not uncommon for bears to be spotted in the county, but attacks on dogs are rare.
