DETROIT LAKES, Minn. (AP) Organizers say a Detroit Lakes area ski hill should be back in business by winter 2014 — 10 years after it closed.
The Detroit Mountain Recreation Area has already broken ground on a new chalet, and the group is just $500,000 shy of its fundraising goal to pay for the $7.5 million project.
Lead fundraiser Mark Fritz says the revamped Detroit Mountain will attract skiers from the entire region, not just locals, because the nearest ski hills are otherwise at least 80 miles away from the Fargo-Moorhead metro area.
Plans call for two new chair lifts, a tubing hill and a terrain park filled with jumps and rails for more adventurous skiers and snowboarders. There will also be cross-country skiing and mountain biking trails.
