ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) -- Shots were fired between a man and a deputy on Thursday evening at a local storage area.
The Benton County Sheriff's Office received a call Thursday evening around 6:00 p.m. from a man stating that he was at a storage facility in the St. Cloud area and that he would be firing some shots. The man then hung up on the dispatcher.
A search of local storage facilities in the St. Cloud and surrounding areas ensued. A short time later, a Benton County deputy found the man at Airway Storage at 3446 2nd Street SE in St. Cloud. The man was sitting in a chair. When the deputy made contact with the man, the man brandished what appeared to be a handgun. and discharged it at the deputy.
The deputy returned fire and retreated to cover. The suspect then left the facility in a vehicle. The vehicle was located a short time later near the intersection of 29th Ave. SE and 3rd St. SE.
At about 8:40 p.m., Christopher Knyphausen, age 42 of Litchfield, was located in a nearby wooded area and taken into custody without incident.
Kyphausen is currently being held in the Benton County Jail on charges of 2nd degree assault. He makes his first court appearance on Monday.
Neither the deputy or Knyphausen were injured in the incident. The Benton County Deputy involved was Deputy Steven Reese. Deputy Reese has 6 months of experience as a deputy with the Benton County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Reese has been put on standard paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated.
The Sherburne County Sheriff's Office assumed the criminal investigation into the incident at the request of the Benton County Sheriff's Office to avoid any potential conflict of interest.
