BIG LAKE, Minn. (KNSI) - An Elk River woman is a new mom -- and she has a Sherburne County Sheriff's deputy to thank after the deputy jumped into action to help the woman deliver her baby Thursday morning.

Kelli Mitchell began to go into labor while at work Thursday morning, so she and a co-worker started driving to New River Hospital in Monticello, Sherburne County Sheriff Joel Brott said.

On the way, Brott said the two pulled over at Sherburne County roads 14 and 30 in Big Lake Township at 7:56 a.m. when they realized the baby was coming immediately.

Sherburne County Sheriff's deputy Aaron Sturm met Mitchell there and, before paramedics could arrive, helped deliver Mitchell's baby girl at 8:07 a.m.

An ambulance arrived and Sturm accompanied Mitchell and her new infant to New River Hospital. Broot said mother and daughter were in reported in good condition.
