(KNSI)--Minnesota Senator Amy Klobuchar will be in St. Cloud this afternoon meeting with members of the Stearns County Domestic Violence Partnership.
Klobuchar will be highlighting the importance of renewing the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) to help law enforcement combat domestic violence.
With federal support through VAWA, Stearns County established the Domestic Violence Partnership in 2008 to improve public safety by strengthening the response of law enforcement and the criminal justice system to cases of domestic violence.
The partnership includes the Stearns County Felony Domestic Violence Court, which supervises a core group of the most dangerous repeat felony domestic violence offenders.
Last week, the Senate voted to renew the bipartisan legislation on a vote of 68 to 31. However, the House must still pass it, otherwise the law is set to expire in September.
Originally enacted in 1994, VAWA has provided important support to local law enforcement, prosecutors and victim advocacy organizations for training and other assistance to stop domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence and stalking.
