ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Top Minnesota lawmakers say they either don't know or can't say which pharmaceutical company they're trying to lure to the state with a tax break gaining steam at the Capitol.
Amid unusual secrecy, the tax plan House Democrats released Monday includes a sales tax exemption on construction materials for a biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility that would be located in Brooklyn Park, which is a Minneapolis suburb. The standalone bill providing the break was formally introduced Tuesday.
House Speaker Paul Thissen and the head of the House Taxes Committee say they don't know which company it is, only that it promises at least 190 new jobs. Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton refused Tuesday to disclose the name, saying it would scare the company off amid competition from other states.
