ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - Members of the St. Cloud Police Department will be vying for an international title this summer in Northern Ireland.
Two 5-member teams will be heading to Belfast to compete in the SWAT competition during the World Police and Fire Games.
St. Cloud Police Sergeant Marty Sayre is part of the squad. He says the invitiation came on the heels of a victory during last year's Can-Am Games, hosted last summer in St. Cloud.
"In 2012, we won the gold medal, and part of the challenge was, 'if we do win the competition, can we get to Northern Ireland?" Sayre says. "That's the highest you can get for police and fire competition."
Sayre says, in addition to the 10 competing officers, the trip includes a medic and several family members. He says they're still raising money, including on Thursday, May 23rd at the Sauk Rapids VFW from 5pm to 8pm.
"When we talked with the mayor, he encouraged us to go, but he said we weren't going to use taxpayer dollars," Sayre explains. "So we've been fundraising. The next is a spaghetti feed with a silent auction, and an $8 suggested donation."
Additionally, fundraiser-goers will get to see and wear SWAT gear.
Sayre says this is the final push of fundraising before the trip, and they've been grateful to area businesses for sponsorship.
The World Police-Fire Games kick off in Belfast on August 1st.
