ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. (AP) — Students and teachers at a St. Louis Park school are remembering two fourth-graders killed in a landslide one year ago.
The Star Tribune reports 500 children and teachers watched at Peter Hobart Elementary School as four white balloons were released Thursday. Two of the balloons represented 10-year-old Mohamed Fofana and 9-year-old Haysem Sani, who were killed in a St. Paul landslide. The other two balloons were dedicated to two classmates who were injured.
The two boys were killed when a cliff fell on them at Lilydale Regional Park during a field trip.
Earlier, the school district and the city of St. Paul reached settlements with the families. Fofana's family is using much of the money to build a school in Guinea. Sani's family is using some of the money to build an orphanage in Ethiopia.
