MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar lost his seat in Congress, but now a scholarship in his name is being created at the University of Minnesota.

The Humphrey School of Public Affairs and a trade association for forest products are announcing the James L. Oberstar Fellowship in Minneapolis on Monday.

Oberstar was the state's longest-serving member of Congress in history, representing northeastern Minnesota in the U.S. House from 1975 until early this year. The Democrat lost in an upset to Republican Chip Cravaack last year after years of bringing road projects home to his district.

Oberstar ended up at the Humphrey School, where he heads a national advisory panel on safety in rural transportation.

The scholarship in Oberstar's name will support one public policy or urban planning student each year.
