MINNEAPOLIS (KNSI) - Xcel Energy is issuing a warning about a new scam targeting its Minnesota customers.
Callers claiming to represent Xcel tell customers that their electric service is about to be disconnected. Customers are told they need to purchase a pre-paid Green Dot Visa card at a store, then call a special number with the card information.
The scam artists remove the money from the card, and may try to re-register it in another name. The targets of the scam are often Hispanic, and the callers have spoken in Spanish.
Xcel Energy says anyone receiving this type of call should call their offices at 1-800-895-4999.
