ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) A Sauk Rapids teenager has been charged in an assault in St. Cloud last week that ended with the death of a 20 year-old man.
Steans County prosecutors charged 17 year-old Jesse Smithers with one count of second-degree murder, one count of first-degree manslaughter and one count of first-degree assault in the death of Colton Gleason of Greenfield.
Gleason was walking in an alley in the 600-block between Eighth and Ninth Avenues South in St. Cloud Thursday night when a vehicle approached him. One of the occupants got out of the car and struck him in the head. Gleason hit his head when he fell, and was taken to St. Cloud Hospital where he died the next day.
Smithers was arrested Monday afternoon following a tip from the public. He's being held without bail until his next court appearance, scheduled for October 2nd. Prosecutors have indicated they will seek to have Smithers tried in adult court.
Police have said they believe Gleason was the victim of a random act of violence.
