SAUK RAPIDS, MN (KNSI) – Construction is not expected to begin anytime soon, but Sauk Rapids is taking steps to open a second city owned liquor store.
Monday night, the city council unanimously voted to buy land for the project. The parcel is located at Golden Spike Road and Industrial Boulevard and carries a purchase price of $375,000. The cost will come from the city's liquor fund.
Sauk Rapids Mayor Dave Saunders says they'll wait for other development to occur in the area before building the liquor store, but he says now was a good time to buy the land.
Sauk Rapids already has a city-owned liquor store in the 300-block of North Benton Drive, which turned a net profit of $135,000 in 2010.
More than 200 Minnesota cities own and operate their own liquor stores.
