ST. CLOUD, Minn. (KNSI) - City and school district officials in Sartell are working on a plan to address traffic control concerns on Pine Cone Road North where the new high school will be built.
The City of Sartell is working with the Sartell - St. Stephen School District to come up with a plan to improve the road from 15th Street North to 35th Street North.
Mayor Sarah Jane Nicoll says the city has been talking about improving Pine Cone Road North for a while now.
"It's just that the design would be different if a high school was out there, and now that we know that there will be a high school on the north end we are able to meet with the school district and start to talk about what that design could look like."
At a recent meeting, officials were presented with several option to update the two-lane road to get it ready for much more traffic.
The new high school is going in near Oak Ridge Elementary School, which is on 27th Street North, and much of the focus is on improving the intersection of 27th Street North and 35th Street North, and the entrance to the new high school.
Among the ideas three ideas being considered, two involve roundabouts and one involves traffic signals.
While the school district is weighing in on the design ideas, city council will ultimately decide which idea is chosen.
The design is expected to be chosen this year, with construction to begin in the summer of 2018.
The city is also working on a road project just to the south of where the new high school is being built; the extension of 15th Street North from Pine Cone Road to 30th Avenue North (Townline Road/75th Avenue).
City officials say the road extension is necessary because of the new school going in and the fact that there really isn't another east-west road between 6th Street South and 35th Street North.
